How to make a new house feel like home

Making a New House Feel Like Home

By Nicola Blackwood of Blackwood Interiors

Just moved in? Here are an interior designer’s top tips for making your new house feel like home.

Think Colour

Consider your paint choice carefully. Colour adds character, style and depth to your room without costing any more.

Plan Your Furniture

Most of us move house and our old furniture moves with us. Take time to consider how it works in different spaces and consider which pieces you love. Then you can compliment old or plain items with new lamps, or re-upholstering a favourite chair to give it a new identity.

Add Some Soft Furnishings

You can add colour, pattern, texture with fabrics, which adds warmth and style to the room and can make it feel more personal. Start small with a cushion or a wool throw that you love and give it some prominence in the room.

Show Off Your Pictures

Artwork on your walls can be one of the most personal touches we make to a room, and who doesn’t love to buy a new picture?

Most of us won’t have a budget to buy artwork when moving, so rediscover your existing pictures by hanging them in a new context. A new frame can change the style of a painting or you can frame a postcard and family photos to create a more personal space.

Consider Plants

These will soften your space and make it feel more homely. If you don’t have green fingers, start simple with an orchid to give height and colour, or a fern for volume. These also make great housewarming gifts!

Styling Your Room

You can keep this simple by finding your favourite book, a candle and a plant, and group them together on a shelf or a traditional Edinburgh Press and it start to feel like home.
